When we make a great trade, we sometimes feel like a hero.
We feel like we’re on top of the world.
But it is rare to see true heroism in real life.
I’m not talking about scoring a big win in your trading account…
I’m talking about acts of courage that make you want to be a better human being.
Well, last week I heard the words of a true hero.
Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, is under attack by Russia and dodging a hail of missiles and gunfire.
The United States offered to evacuate Zelensky to safety.
I’m sure most of us would have taken the easy way out and accepted the offer.
But this was his reply…
“I remain in the capital… My family is in Ukraine… My children are in Ukraine.
The enemy has marked me as target #1, my family as target #2.
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.”
Know Your Risk
As traders, we often talk about risk versus reward. But the risk here is clearly quite different.
Zelensky knows the risk of staying in Ukraine. He knows he will likely die any day.
And yet he remains steadfast, fighting in defense of his country.
After hearing what Zelensky said and watching the horrific events unfold in Ukraine, I had two thoughts…
First, I can’t imagine any US president having the same response. I could be wrong, but I imagine most would protect themselves first.
And second… What would I die for?
For what cause would I give up comfort, safety, security and all other worldly possessions?
What force would I stand steadfast against, regardless of cost?
Take Time to Reflect
Seeing the worst in people often brings out the best in others.
And it is important to reflect on our own lives on such occasions.
If you died today, what story would be told?
What would you be most proud of?
Surely, it wouldn’t be the money you’ve made in the markets.
What would you want to change? And what would you wish you had done differently?
Only you can answer those questions.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Ukraine and victims of war across the globe.
And remember… Some things are more important than money.
