Take a look at this chart.
It shows two things:
Retail cash trading volume…
And retail options trading volume.
“Cash” here simply means regular stock trades.
So the top chart shows how aggressively retail traders are buying and selling actual shares.
The bottom chart shows how aggressively they’re trading options.
And right now, both are exploding.
Retail cash volumes are on pace for one of the most active months ever.
Retail options volume is also tracking to hit another record high.
In other words, there’s a retail speculation frenzy going on right now.
And as I explain below…
It could lead to a very “noisy” market.
Insight of the Day
Most retail trading activity is nothing but noise.
When retail stock volume and retail options volume both hit extremes, the market usually gets louder…
But not clearer.
A lot of that activity is just traders reacting to whatever already moved.
That can create more volatility in the short term.
But it does not create better signals.
In fact, it often makes the tape harder to read.
More volume does not mean better information.
That’s why I don’t pay attention to options activity just because there’s a lot of it.
I care about the trades that stand out from the crowd.
The ones that are unusually large… unusually focused… and unusual relative to that stock’s normal activity.
That’s where the signal is…
